A new small theater joins Savannah's growing arts scene

A Flexible Stage for Fresh Performances

Savannah’s arts scene is about to get a boost with the opening of a new black box theater at 15-25 E. Maupas Ave. in the Thomas Square area. Unlike traditional theaters, this space is designed for maximum adaptability, hosting a variety of shows—from avant-garde plays to experimental performances—with seating for up to 80 people.

Shows are set to run four to five times a week, with weekday performances at 7 p.m. and weekend matinees at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

More Than Just Entertainment: A Sustainable Creative Hub

This project isn’t just about putting on shows—it’s also about securing the theater’s future. The city council has granted a special use permit to sell drinks during performances, providing an additional revenue stream to keep the theater running long-term.

However, this comes with strict conditions:

• The license is tied to this specific location
• Alcohol service is limited to theatergoers only
• The permit cannot be transferred to new owners

These safeguards aim to protect the neighborhood’s character while giving local artists a sustainable platform.

A Perfect Fit for Savannah’s Thriving Arts District

The Starland District is already a hub for arts, culture, and nightlife, with Victory North, Starland Yard, and Moodrights just a short walk away. This new theater could be the missing piece, offering one more reason for locals and visitors to explore the area.

The Thomas Square Neighborhood Group has thrown its support behind the project, seeing it as a chance to enrich the community with live performances.

Parking Woes: A Looming Challenge

Not everyone is convinced. Parking has long been a concern in the Starland District, with streets often packed on weekends. While the city has temporarily allowed parking on both sides of Maupas Avenue, the solution may prove insufficient for larger audiences.

New Oak Theatre Takes the Stage in Savannah

Behind this venture is the New Oak Theatre, currently operating out of the Tybee Post Theater on Tybee Island. This move marks their first foray into downtown Savannah, with plans to bring their productions to the city center.

The hope? That this theater becomes a regular fixture in Savannah’s arts calendar, offering fresh performances for four to six weeks at a time.
