A Night of Local Legends and Big Wins

Orange County, CA, USASaturday, June 20, 2026

The Angel Stadium’s Diamond Club Lounge transformed into a stage for the brightest stars of Orange County last night, as the OC Sports Awards celebrated hometown heroes, national icons, and the unbreakable bonds that tie them together.

Heartfelt Beginnings: Drysdale & Miller’s Unlikely Friendship

The night opened with a poignant tribute as Ann Meyers Drysdale, now 71 and a broadcasting icon, was greeted by her dear friend Cheryl Miller, the USC legend. Drysdale’s Legacy Award honored her storied career and her brother Dave Drysdale’s recent induction into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame.

"Sports pride doesn’t see rival teams—it sees greatness," Miller remarked, highlighting how a Trojan and a Bruin could stand side by side in admiration.

Steinberg’s Lifetime Achievement: A Billion-Dollar Vision

Leigh Steinberg, Newport Beach’s own sports agent extraordinaire, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at 77. With contracts totaling over $4 billion and a roster of 12 Hall of Famers, Steinberg reflected on the power of family, legacy, and giving back.

"Athletes aren’t just players—they’re voices that shape society," Steinberg noted, recalling a PSA by Lennox Lewis aimed at steering teenagers toward better choices.

Peirsol’s Iconic Streak: A Record Still Unmatched

Five-time Olympic gold medalist Aaron Peirsol, a Newport Harbor High alum and backstroke legend, received the Icon Award. Now a champion of ocean conservation in Hawaii, Peirsol proudly shared that his 200-meter backstroke world record (2009) remains unbroken.

"Breaking records is one thing—but inspiring the next generation to surpass them? That’s the real win," he said.

Champions, Coaches & Rising Stars: The Night’s Other Honorees

  • Natalie Nakase (Coach of the Year) – Led the Golden State Valkyries with humility, crediting her entire team.
  • Makena Cook & Acen Jimenez (High School Athletes of the Year)
  • Hunter Hernandez & Kyle Evans (College Athletes of the Year)
  • Ashlyn Gwynn (Rising Star, Cal State Fullerton Soccer) – A name to watch in the years ahead.

A Legacy of Champions

From Olympic gold to record-breaking agents, the OC Sports Awards proved that Orange County isn’t just a hub for talent—it’s a breeding ground for history, humility, and unshakable pride.

Because when the spotlight fades, the legends never do.
