Anchorage Assembly Stands Divided Over George Martinez’s Flight
The Anchorage Assembly is at a crossroads following state regulators' decision to fine Representative George Martinez for misusing campaign funds on an unauthorized round-trip flight to Florida.
Censure vs. Resignation: A Bitter Divide
A faction of Assembly members—Erin Baldwin Day, Keith McCormick, and Sydney Scout—are preparing to introduce a resolution formally censuring Martinez. Though a censure carries no legal consequences, it would publicly condemn his actions and signal that the Assembly holds its members to strict ethical standards.
"Silence feels like avoidance," Baldwin Day argued, emphasizing the need to restore public trust and refocus on governance. The resolution also acknowledges voters' recourse: residents retain the option to pursue a recall if they believe Martinez has violated their trust.
The Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) had already deemed Martinez’s violations "particularly egregious", slapping him with a $5,300 fine—the maximum penalty. Martinez complied within 72 hours, reimbursing his campaign and acknowledging the Assembly’s authority to enforce accountability.
A Call for Resignation—and Potential Removal
Not all members share the censure approach. Representatives Donald Handeland and Jared Goecker, both from Chugiak-Eagle River, have demanded Martinez’s immediate resignation. If he refuses, they plan to pursue his removal under municipal code by filing a separate resolution for an investigation.
Their accusation document, already submitted to the clerk, alleges false testimony, record-keeping failures, and personal use of campaign funds.
Uncertain Path Forward
Assembly Chair Anna Brawley has urged caution, requesting a delay until July 17 to clarify the legal procedures for censure and removal—processes with little precedent in municipal governance. She also cautioned about potential legal costs for members entangled in the dispute.
The Assembly will convene Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Loussac Library to debate these contentious options.
