Bitcoin Backing: A Shift in Strategy
Standard Chartered remains bullish on Bitcoin, sticking to its $100,000 price target. The bank's global head of digital assets research, Geoffrey Kendrick, thinks recent market jitters are just a communication issue. He points out that Strategy, a major Bitcoin holder, has changed its approach. Instead of just accumulating Bitcoin, it's now using the cryptocurrency as collateral for its growing preferred stock business. This shift has left some investors scrambling to understand the new strategy.
Strategy currently holds a massive 843,775 BTC, which is about 4% of all Bitcoins that will ever exist. For years, the company's model relied on its stock trading at a premium to its Bitcoin holdings. This allowed it to issue more stock, buy more Bitcoin, and increase shareholder value. However, with that premium largely gone, Strategy is repositioning Bitcoin as collateral for its perpetual preferred stock, STRC. This security pays a 12% annual dividend and has about $10 billion outstanding.
The recent sale of 32 BTC by Strategy triggered concerns. The company's stock, STRC, fell sharply, creating a negative feedback loop. Despite expanding its US dollar reserve to $2.55 billion, which covers about 17 months of dividend payments, STRC still trades near $90. Kendrick believes that clearer communication about Strategy's new approach would help restore confidence. He thinks this would reduce the need for future Bitcoin sales.
Kendrick's view is that strong communication can be as effective as a central bank's promise to do whatever it takes to stabilize the market. In this case, credibility can minimize the need for intervention. The goal is to make investors feel secure about Strategy's new direction.
Understanding the shift in Strategy's approach is crucial. The company's new model focuses on using Bitcoin as collateral, rather than just accumulating it.
