Breaking Down Barriers to Better Oral Health
Oral health is a big deal in Europe, and it's about time it got the attention it deserves. For too long, people who are already struggling have been facing huge obstacles when trying to get the dental care they need. It's not just about money; it's also about knowledge, support, and feeling comfortable enough to seek help.
The DELIVER project brought together a diverse group of people, including those who have experienced poverty or social exclusion, healthcare professionals, social workers, and policymakers. They used a collaborative approach to identify the main barriers to oral healthcare and come up with practical solutions.
So, what are the main barriers? High treatment costs, limited insurance coverage, and low oral health literacy are major issues. But it's not just about money; emotional and psychological factors like shame and fear also play a huge role. And let's not forget competing life priorities, limited support from professional organizations, and poor communication between social and oral healthcare services.
The good news is that community networks can make a real difference. By working together, they can develop solutions that are tailored to the needs of the community. This might include walk-in consultations in community settings, buddy systems, improved support for navigating insurance, and stronger integration of dental and social care.
It's clear that engaging citizens as co-creators is key to developing inclusive and needs-based solutions. This approach enables community networks to systematically identify barriers and address them through collaboration. By doing so, they can substantially reduce inequalities in access to oral healthcare.
The study found that 64 participants contributed to 21 interviews, 7 focus groups, and 4 co-creation meetings. The results showed that community-network approaches can improve oral healthcare accessibility. By identifying barriers and addressing them through community-based collaboration, it's possible to make a positive impact on the lives of those who need it most.
