Cancer Survivorship: A Roadmap for Care

GermanyThursday, July 9, 2026

Millions of people are living longer lives after cancer, but their journey doesn't end with treatment. Many face challenges that can affect their physical and mental health, finances, and overall well-being. The good news is that experts have developed guidelines to help healthcare providers support these survivors.

These guidelines, from Germany and around the world, offer advice on follow-up care and long-term survivorship. Researchers looked at 198 guidelines and found 2,270 recommendations. Most of these guidelines focused on adults and covered a range of topics, from previous treatments to long-term health risks.

However, the guidelines varied in their approach to equity, with some considering factors like age, but few addressing socioeconomic status, race, or cultural background. This is a concern, as these factors can greatly impact a person's ability to access and benefit from care.

The researchers found that only 39% of the recommendations were based on solid evidence. This highlights the need for more research and better guidelines to ensure that survivors receive the best possible care.

Long-term survivorship care is a complex issue, and it's clear that a more thoughtful and comprehensive approach is needed. By working together, healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers can create a roadmap for care that addresses the unique needs of cancer survivors and promotes health, equity, and well-being for all.
