Cannabis Link to Testicular Cancer
Young men are getting testicular cancer at an alarming rate. This type of cancer is the most common among men in their 20s and 30s. Researchers are trying to figure out what's behind this trend. They think that things people can control, like using cannabis, might play a role.
A recent study in France looked at how cannabis use affects the risk of testicular cancer. They talked to 454 men who had testicular cancer and 670 men who didn't. They wanted to know when and how often these men used cannabis.
The study found that using cannabis every day in early adulthood might increase the risk of testicular cancer. This was especially true for a type of testicular cancer called seminoma. Men who used cannabis daily during this time were 1.5 times more likely to get testicular cancer. For seminoma, the risk was even higher - 2.02 times more likely.
It's not just daily use that's a problem. Using cannabis regularly between the ages of 12 and 25 also seemed to increase the risk. Men who did this were 1.85 times more likely to get testicular cancer. Again, the risk was higher for seminoma - 2.29 times more likely.
These findings don't mean that cannabis is the only cause of testicular cancer. Other things like tobacco, alcohol, and education level can also play a role. But they do suggest that using cannabis in early adulthood might be a risk factor. More research is needed to confirm these results and understand how cannabis affects testicular cancer risk.
