Celebrating 250 Years of American Spirit
Erin Scavino, a former reality TV star, has been tasked with leading a unique initiative to showcase American culture as the country prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary. As the director of the State Department's Art in Embassies program, Scavino is no stranger to promoting American art and values on a global scale.
The Art in Embassies program, established in 1964, has been placing American artwork in diplomatic properties around the world, fostering cultural diplomacy and understanding. With the upcoming anniversary, Scavino saw an opportunity to bring this program to a wider audience.
A new exhibition, "Passport to Patriotism: 250 Years of Diplomacy," has opened at the Art Museum of the Americas, featuring over 30 contemporary American artists. Their work explores themes of patriotism, diplomacy, military service, immigration, and national identity.
One of the standout pieces is "Gallantly Streaming" by Barbara Ernst Prey, a stunning interpretation of the American flag. Romero Britto's vibrant "Liberty for All" reimagines the Statue of Liberty, celebrating the American dream.
The exhibition also includes a powerful series of photographs by Korina Marie Moore, capturing moments of military service from a personal perspective. Visitors can see an America 250 haute couture gown inspired by Betsy Ross' flag, created by designer Kate Wasserbach Moore.
Scavino's goal is to make art more approachable, encouraging visitors to engage with the stories behind each piece. By incorporating QR codes that allow visitors to hear directly from the artists, Scavino aims to break down barriers and make the exhibition welcoming to a broad audience.
For Scavino, this project is a chance to showcase the diverse stories that make up the American experience. By celebrating 250 years of American history through art, she hopes to inspire conversations and foster a deeper appreciation for the nation's values and culture.
