Chatbots in Dental Education: A New Frontier

Recently, researchers compared the performance of three large language models - ChatGPT 5, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini 3 - with dental students in restorative dentistry. They used multiple-choice questions from the Turkish Dentistry Specialization Entrance Exam to test their knowledge.

These chatbots have been making waves in various fields, and now they're being put to the test in dentistry. The researchers found that Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini 3 performed similarly, and both outperformed ChatGPT 5 and dental students. What's interesting is that ChatGPT 5 still managed to surpass the students' overall accuracy.

The study analyzed the chatbots' and students' responses across different levels of knowledge and cognitive process, as well as various subject areas. It turned out that Microsoft Copilot was a rockstar, achieving over 90% accuracy in all categories. The chatbots, in particular, shone when it came to applying their knowledge, with all three achieving 100% accuracy in that area.

The findings suggest that chatbots have tremendous potential as complementary learning resources in dental education. However, experts must thoroughly test and verify their reliability in both academic and clinical settings. It's also crucial for students to develop critical thinking skills to effectively evaluate and utilize these systems.
