Chatbots Put to the Test: Dental Implant Queries
Researchers recently put three popular chatbots to the test, asking them to answer common patient questions about dental implants. The goal was to see how well these AI models could provide reliable and useful information. The chatbots in question were ChatGPT-4.5, DeepSeek, and Claude Sonnet 3.7.
They were asked 27 questions that patients often have about dental implants. These questions covered topics like who is a good candidate for implants, potential risks, symptoms of peri-implant diseases, and what to expect after tooth loss. Two oral and maxillofacial surgeons evaluated the chatbots' answers using a special rating system.
The results showed that all three chatbots performed similarly in terms of reliability and usefulness. There wasn't a significant difference between them in these areas. However, Claude Sonnet 3.7 stood out for providing longer, more detailed answers. ChatGPT-4.5 gave shorter answers and used fewer medical terms, but wasn't necessarily the easiest to read. DeepSeek scored higher in terms of readability.
One interesting finding was that the chatbots differed significantly in their ability to avoid using complex medical jargon. This is an important consideration, as patients may not always understand technical terms. The surgeons who evaluated the answers agreed highly on their ratings, showing that the assessment was consistent.
The study suggests that these chatbots could be useful tools for patients looking for information about dental implants. They could help patients get a better understanding of their options and what to expect. This could lead to more informed decision-making and better health outcomes.
