China's Aging Population Faces Multimorbidity Challenge

ChinaTuesday, July 7, 2026

China's older adults are facing a growing health challenge. Many are living with multiple chronic conditions at the same time. This is known as multimorbidity. A recent study looked at data from over 11,000 adults aged 60 and above. It found that nearly half of them, or 46.03%, had two or more chronic conditions.

The study showed that as people get older, their chances of having multimorbidity increase. For example, people aged 70 and above were more than twice as likely to have multimorbidity compared to those in their 60s. Women were also more likely to have multiple conditions than men.

But here's the good news: a healthy lifestyle can make a big difference. People who were physically active, had a higher education level, and had better access to medical care were less likely to have multimorbidity.

The study also looked at factors that affect multimorbidity at the county level. It found that things like physical activity, income, sleep duration, and access to social security benefits played a big role.

Experts think that improving medical resources, especially primary care, and encouraging healthy lifestyles can help reduce the burden of multimorbidity among older Chinese adults. This is important because it can help people live healthier, happier lives as they age.
