Closing the Gap in Concussion Care for Performing Arts

UniversityFriday, July 17, 2026

University students involved in performing arts are often overlooked in discussions about concussions. A recent study aimed to change that by identifying ways to improve education and management of concussions in this group. The researchers gathered a panel of 21 experts, including clinicians, researchers, faculty members, and students who have experienced concussions.

They used a modified Delphi technique, which involves several rounds of questions and feedback. In the first round, panelists answered open-ended questions about concussion education, challenges in returning to performances, barriers to getting care, and strategies for managing concussions. The research team analyzed the responses and created statements for the panelists to vote on in the next rounds.

The panelists rated the statements on a scale of 1 to 9, with 1 being "strongly disagree" and 9 being "strongly agree". They then reviewed the group's average scores and could change their votes. The statements that received an average score of 7 or higher were considered to have reached consensus.

The study found that the panelists agreed on 20 topics that should be included in future concussion education materials. They also identified 21 challenges that performing arts students face when returning to performances after a concussion, 13 barriers to getting care on campus, and 23 strategies to improve support for students with concussions.

These findings could help universities develop policies to address the specific needs of performing arts students when it comes to concussions. By improving education and management, universities can help prevent long-term damage and ensure that students can continue to pursue their passions safely.
