College Students and Risky Behavior

Daqing, Northeast ChinaMonday, July 13, 2026

Many college students take risks when it comes to sex. This can lead to serious health problems and unwanted pregnancies. Researchers wanted to understand why this happens. They looked at students from three universities in Northeast China. Over 1,700 students filled out a survey about their attitudes towards sex, friends, and safety.

About 26% of students said they were sexually active, and 9.6% reported having risky sex. For those who were sexually active, the number was even higher - 37.3% had taken risks. So, what makes students take these risks? It turns out that their surroundings play a big role. This includes things like how much money they have, who their friends are, and where they go to have fun.

The researchers also talked to students who had taken risks. They found that some students did it because of how they felt - like if they were under pressure or had strong feelings. Others did it because of their relationships or because they were lonely. The researchers think that understanding these situations can help prevent risky behavior.

They suggest that colleges should pay attention to students' situations and provide help when needed. This could include teaching students about safe sex, providing support for those who are struggling, and creating a safe environment for students to talk about their feelings. By understanding what leads to risky behavior, colleges can take steps to keep students safe and healthy.
