Colorado's Renewable Energy Surge

Colorado, USAWednesday, July 15, 2026

Colorado has made a significant leap in its energy transition, with renewables accounting for 53% of the state's electricity in the first quarter of the year. This milestone is a testament to the state's commitment to clean energy. In 2004, only 2.6% of Colorado's electricity came from renewables, primarily hydroelectric power from the Colorado River dams.

The state's largest utility, Xcel Energy, has been instrumental in driving this change, helped by the decreasing costs of wind and solar energy. The cost of solar energy, for instance, has dropped by up to 90% since 2010. Additionally, lithium-ion batteries have become more affordable, enabling utilities to meet peak demands with renewable energy.

While Colorado ranks 12th in the US for renewable energy production, other states are leading the way. South Dakota, for example, generates 80% of its electricity from hydroelectric sources, while Iowa produces 70% of its electricity from wind. Globally, renewables are on the rise, with solar energy driving most of the growth. For the first time in over a century, renewables produced more electricity than coal.

However, experts warn that achieving 100% renewable energy will require innovative solutions and careful planning. Existing technologies can achieve 90% emissions-free electricity, but the final 10% will require new approaches. Natural gas will likely remain a part of the energy mix for the next 20-30 years, but new storage technologies and enhanced geothermal energy may hold the key to a fully renewable future.

As Colorado continues to push towards its renewable energy goals, it's clear that there's still much work to be done. The state's 22 electrical cooperatives and 29 municipal utilities, along with investor-owned utilities like Xcel and Black Hills Energy, will play a crucial role in driving this transition. With sophisticated state policy and regulation, Colorado can prevent emissions backsliding and ensure a sustainable energy future.
