Disney's Big Win: Art of Animation Tax Rethought
Walt Disney World has scored another victory in its ongoing battle against the Orange County Property Appraiser. The dispute centered on the value of Disney's Art of Animation Resort, which was previously pegged at between $253 million and $324 million each year from 2015 to 2018.
A settlement has been reached, slashing the resort's just value by 3% annually. This brings the numbers down to approximately $245 million to $314 million. The total reduction amounts to nearly $34 million.
So, what does this mean for Disney? Essentially, the tax collector must now recalculate the taxes owed based on these revised values. If Disney overpaid, they will receive a refund.
This case isn't an isolated incident. Disney has been challenging property tax valuations for years, claiming they exceed the actual market value. In 2016, they won a suit related to Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge and Disney's Wilderness Lodge.
The outcome of these lawsuits has significant implications for local schools. Orange County Public Schools has set aside $119 million for potential refunds to Disney. Superintendent Dr. Maria Vazquez has suggested that any leftover funds could boost teacher salaries.
The Orange County Classroom Teachers Association and Disney Cast Members have been rallying against Disney's lawsuits. They delivered petitions urging Disney to drop the cases.
The question on everyone's mind is: what impact will this have on the local community? Will the reduced tax value benefit the schools and teachers, or will it have far-reaching consequences?
