Exercise for Better Sleep in Breast Cancer Patients
Breast cancer patients often struggle with sleep. Researchers have been looking into how different types of exercise can help. They checked out a bunch of studies to see what works best.
The researchers found 39 studies with over 4,000 participants. They compared different exercise types to see how they affected sleep. It turns out that Tai Chi and Qigong were the most helpful, followed closely by yoga and combined exercise.
Aerobic exercise might also help, but it's not entirely clear. Other types of exercise like resistance training, dance, and stretching didn't seem to make a big difference. The researchers also looked at how much exercise is needed to make a difference. They found that a moderate amount of exercise, around 4.5 METs, 281.3 MET·min/session, and 910 MET·min/week, seems to be the sweet spot.
People with worse sleep problems to begin with seemed to benefit more from exercise. This is a promising finding, but the researchers are cautious. They want more high-quality studies to confirm these results.
The good news is that exercise can be a useful tool for improving sleep in breast cancer patients. It's not a replacement for medical treatment, but it's a helpful addition. Patients should talk to their doctors about trying exercise to improve their sleep.
