Heat Wave Hits: NJ Under Extreme Weather Alerts

New JerseyTuesday, July 14, 2026

A severe heat wave is bearing down on New Jersey, prompting extreme weather alerts across all 21 counties. Temperatures are expected to skyrocket into the upper 90s, with some areas potentially reaching a scorching 100 degrees on Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued warnings, citing "dangerously hot conditions" that could lead to heat-related illnesses.

The heat alerts, which include an extreme heat watch and advisory, will be in effect from Wednesday morning to evening. During this time, the air temperature will be at its hottest, and high humidity could make it feel as hot as 106 degrees in some areas. Eight counties, including Burlington, Camden, and Middlesex, are under an extreme heat watch, which may be upgraded to a warning. The remaining 13 counties are under a heat advisory.

This heat wave is particularly concerning, given that New Jersey recently experienced 29 heat-related deaths across 10 counties. Many of these incidents involved people found in homes without air conditioning, highlighting the importance of staying cool and hydrated. The heat is expected to intensify on Wednesday, with temperatures potentially reaching record highs.

In fact, some weather reporting stations may get temperatures close to daily record highs for July 15. For example, the record high in Atlantic City is 100 degrees, set in 1995. A cold front is expected to bring some relief on Thursday, but another front may bring strong thunderstorms with damaging winds on Friday. Residents are advised to take precautions and stay informed about the latest weather updates.
