How a late hit changed the game for Knoxville Smokies
A Game Delayed, A Victory Earned
Mother Nature had other plans on May 23, drenching the diamond with rain and forcing a postponement. What was supposed to be a Friday night showdown between the Knoxville Smokies and the Montgomery Biscuits was pushed to Saturday—but the wait only made the eventual clash more intense.
When the Smokies finally took the field, they didn’t just play—they delivered drama.
The Eighth-Inning Miracle
Tied 1-1 in the late innings, the Smokies needed a spark. That spark came in the form of Jefferson Rojas, the Chicago Cubs’ top prospect, who had gone 0-for-3 before the moment of truth.
With the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Rojas dug in and laced an RBI single, driving in Alex Ramirez from second. The run broke the deadlock, and Knoxville held on for a 2-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader.
Rojas and Ramirez combined for four of the team’s six hits, proving their offensive firepower when it mattered most.
A Pitchers’ Duel Steals the Early Show
Before Rojas’ heroics, the game was a slow-burning chess match between the two staffs.
- Xavier Isaac leveled the score in the fourth inning with a solo home run, knotting the game at 1-1.
- Brooks Caple (Knoxville) and Chris Clark (Montgomery) traded zeroes, with Caple firing six shutout innings without a walk, while Clark silenced the Smokies’ bats for 4.1 innings, allowing just two hits and a walk.
The Smokies’ only run before Rojas’ hit came from Owen Ayers the night before—proof that one well-placed swing can turn the tide.
A Tight Race in the Standings
With the win, Knoxville improved to 22-20, keeping them neck-and-neck with Montgomery (22-20) in the Southern League North. The Biscuits had their chances but couldn’t overcome Knoxville’s late surge.
The second game of the doubleheader followed, with both teams adjusting their strategies in hopes of turning the momentum in their favor.
