Keon Ellis Leaves Cavs for Nets After Short Stint
Ellis inked a two-year, $18 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets early in free agency, leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers after just four months in Ohio.
A Brief Stint in Cleveland
Acquired from the Sacramento Kings in a three-team trade before the February deadline, Ellis suited up for the Cavaliers in 29 games, averaging 6.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per contest. Despite Cleveland’s strong season—finishing 52-30 and reaching the conference finals—Ellis was excluded from the playoff rotation, a sign of his limited role.
The End of an Era in Cleveland
With the Cavaliers holding a high salary cap and a crowded roster, Ellis’s departure was inevitable. Financial constraints also played a role: Cleveland aimed to retain forward Dean Wade, seeking a $15 million deal within the non-taxpayer midlevel exception. Operating below the cap aprons, the team could only offer veteran minimum contracts, forcing tough decisions.
Ellis was brought in as a 3-and-D specialist to bolster the bench, particularly after the trade for De’Andre Hunter. Yet, Cleveland’s roster moves and financial limits made his exit a necessity.
A New Chapter in Brooklyn
Now, Ellis joins the Nets, where he’ll likely see more playing time than in Cleveland. Brooklyn, however, faces its own uncertainties, particularly with LeBron James’ future casting doubt over their free-agency plans.
Will Ellis thrive in a larger role, or will Brooklyn’s roster challenges reshape his career once again?
