Kinepolis Expands in America with New Cinema Deal
A Belgian cinema giant is making a bold move to dominate North America’s big-screen landscape. Kinepolis, the European movie-theatre powerhouse, has inked a $30 million deal to acquire Showcase Cinemas, a historic U.S. cinema chain.
A Strategic Power Play
The acquisition brings 13 prime theatre locations under Kinepolis’ control, with a heavy concentration in Massachusetts and New York. Six of these sites will transition to full ownership, while the remaining seven will stay under lease agreements. The deal is expected to close before summer’s end, positioning Kinepolis for a strong U.S. presence from Michigan to the East Coast.
From National Amusements to a New Era
Showcase Cinemas was once part of National Amusements, a media empire that later passed to David Ellison, the current chairman of Harbor Lights Entertainment—the seller in this transaction. Now, Kinepolis steps in as the new steward of these premium venues.
Expanding the Empire
With this purchase, Kinepolis now boasts 164 screens in the U.S., adding to its global total of 1,314 screens. In 2025 alone, Showcase Cinemas attracted four million visitors and generated over $90 million in revenue. The theatres are known for their upgraded food offerings, premium large-screen formats, and stadium-style reclining seats, ensuring a high-end cinematic experience.
Brand Identity Remains Intact
Despite the ownership change, Showcase Cinemas will retain its name, ensuring continuity for loyal moviegoers. Kinepolis’ CEO highlighted the deal’s strategic value, emphasizing the opportunities for future real-estate redevelopment and a stronger foothold in the competitive U.S. market.
A Global Cinema Juggernaut
Kinepolis already operates 63 cinemas across Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Poland. In North America, it currently runs 35 locations in Canada and 24 in the United States—a footprint that will now grow significantly with this acquisition.
