Longmont’s Utility Boxes Get a Colorful Make‑over

Longmont, Colorado, USASaturday, July 4, 2026

A bold new initiative is set to transform Longmont’s urban landscape as ten local artists prepare to breathe life into the city’s electric boxes. Chosen by community vote—with over 500 ballots cast between April 23 and May 18—the selected creators will unveil their designs across Longmont later this year, turning functional infrastructure into dazzling public art.

The Chosen Ten

The winning artists, a diverse mix of talent, include:

  • Jon Fukuda
  • The Ghera duo
  • Joyanna Rose Gittings
  • Stephanie Jordan
  • Isis Ramirez
  • Travis Rueckert
  • Aleta Sherman
  • Kathy Sievering
  • Dustin Spencer
  • Savanna Sulaiman

Their works will reflect a rich tapestry of themes—from Colorado’s 150-year statehood and the U.S. Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary to local landscapes and nature, rendered in styles spanning realism to bold abstraction.

From Concept to Canvas

With a firm deadline of October 31, each artist will receive a $2,000 stipend to cover materials, while the city supplies the boxes and coordinates their placements. Prior to painting, artists will undergo training to ensure a seamless integration of art and utility.

A Legacy of Community-Driven Art

Since its inception in 2010, Longmont’s Shock Art program has empowered residents to shape the city’s aesthetic. Now, as the project gears up for another cycle, applications for next year’s competition will open in spring 2025, inviting fresh voices to contribute to this ever-evolving outdoor gallery.

Stay tuned—Longmont’s streets are about to get a lot more vibrant.
