Malaria Vaccine Rollout in Sudan: Healthcare Providers' Perspectives
Sudan introduced the malaria vaccine in October 2024, starting in Al-Qadarif and Blue Nile states, areas heavily affected by an ongoing conflict. The success of this rollout largely depends on the acceptance of the vaccine among healthcare providers. A recent study explored the knowledge, attitudes, and concerns of these providers regarding the malaria vaccine.
The study, conducted from January to February 2025, involved 342 healthcare providers from Al-Qadarif and Al-Damazin teaching hospitals. The findings showed a generally positive attitude towards the vaccine, but a significant gap in specific operational knowledge was evident. Many healthcare providers expressed concerns, with 64% worried about the vaccine's overall safety and efficacy. The primary concerns included potential adverse effects, the handling of the vaccine under Sudan's conditions, and its effectiveness.
The study also found that older healthcare providers and those working in certain hospitals had higher levels of knowledge about the vaccine. Interestingly, the level of knowledge was the only factor that significantly influenced the acceptability of the vaccine. This suggests that as healthcare providers gain more experience and technical knowledge, they are more likely to accept and support the vaccine.
The study's results highlight the need for targeted educational interventions to address the knowledge gaps and concerns among healthcare providers. Rather than relying on broad promotional campaigns, health authorities should focus on providing specific, technical information to build confidence in the vaccine. This approach is crucial, especially in fragile settings like Sudan, where the success of the vaccine rollout depends on the trust and cooperation of healthcare providers.
The way healthcare providers get their information also plays a role in their attitudes towards the vaccine. Social media and peers were the most common sources of information, highlighting the importance of leveraging these channels to disseminate accurate and reliable information. By addressing the concerns and knowledge gaps of healthcare providers, Sudan can ensure a successful rollout of the malaria vaccine and ultimately reduce the burden of this disease in the country.
