Malawi's COVID-19 Chatbot Success

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Malawi took a bold step by launching a national chatbot on WhatsApp. This move made them one of the first African countries to use digital health tools to streamline COVID-19 support. The chatbot was designed to provide the public with vital information, help report symptoms, and navigate services.

The chatbot's impact was significant. From May 2020 to May 2023, it was accessed 347,117 times. A large portion of these accesses, 70.8%, was focused on getting COVID-19 statistics. This shows that people were eager to stay informed about the pandemic. The chatbot's usage patterns also mirrored the trends of reported COVID-19 cases. This was especially true during the first and second waves of the pandemic and after lockdown events.

Interestingly, the chatbot experienced downtime on 38% of days. The longest downtime occurred during the national vaccine rollout in 2021. This was when vaccine-related features were added to the chatbot. After this update, the chatbot received 198 reports of COVID-19 vaccine-related rumors and 644 accesses to vaccine FAQs. Compared to call-based services, the chatbot had more interactions. However, people preferred calling to report symptoms.

The chatbot's success can inform the design and implementation of future digital health communication tools. It shows that with the right tools, governments can effectively engage with their citizens during a pandemic.
