Natural Grass for Safety
The 2026 FIFA World Cup brought together the world's best soccer players. They played on natural grass at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This field came from Tuckahoe Farms in South Jersey. FIFA requires natural grass for its games. They do this to keep players safe and make sure the game is played well.
These soccer stars ran, slid, and tackled on this great grass. But, back in New Jersey, kids play on artificial turf. This turf is made of plastic and can get very hot. It can also hurt players. The question is, why is it okay for World Cup stars to play on natural grass, but not for New Jersey kids?
Artificial turf has a lot of plastic - about 40,000 pounds per field. This is like 24 million plastic straws or 2.4 million plastic water bottles. These fields only last 8 to 10 years and have PFAS, also known as forever chemicals. They are not easy to recycle and often end up in landfills or are dumped illegally. This creates big environmental and health problems.
Playing on artificial turf can also be dangerous. The surface can get very hot, over 150 degrees. This can cause heat stroke. Many athletes prefer natural grass because it's safer and better for their bodies. A study of 1,129 elite players found that 75% of them think top-level games should be played on natural grass.
The NFL Players Association did a survey and found that over 90% of professional football players prefer natural grass. They like it because it's safer and easier on their bodies. The players gave natural grass fields a B+ grade, but turf fields got a D grade.
New Jersey needs to make sure its kids have safe places to play. The state should invest in natural grass fields. This would keep players safe and help the environment. Some people are calling for the state to pass laws that stop using taxpayer money for artificial turf.
The World Cup showed that natural grass is the best choice for sports. It's time for New Jersey to make natural grass the standard for all players. This way, kids and community athletes will have safe and healthy places to play.
