In a quiet corner of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, a rural monitoring station recorded an unsettling surge in fine particulate matter during Diwali. Over twenty days, researchers tracked pollution levels—before, during, and after the festival—uncovering a stark contrast between day and night.
Nighttime Pollution Soars Beyond Legal Limits
While daytime readings remained relatively stable, nighttime levels skyrocketed to 632 µg/m³—more than double the daytime average and far exceeding India’s permissible air quality standards.
Fireworks Leave a Toxic Metal Fingerprint
The culprit? Fireworks. Chemical analysis revealed a dramatic spike in hazardous metals:
- Lead, barium, calcium, and iron surged 3 to 20 times higher at night.
- Aluminum, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and antimony also showed significant increases.
To quantify this phenomenon, researchers developed a "Diwali-Induced Enrichment" index, which confirmed that fireworks were the primary source of the pollution spike, accounting for a large portion of the data’s variation.
Short-Lived but Deadly: The Hidden Danger
Though the surge lasted only a few hours, the metal-laden dust posed serious health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Even brief exposure to such concentrated pollutants can lead to long-term health complications.
