Rural Refugees' Healthcare Hurdles

Rural areas of high-income countriesThursday, July 16, 2026

They face unique challenges when it comes to getting medical care. Refugees and asylum-seekers who settle in rural areas of wealthy countries often struggle to access healthcare services. A recent review of studies looked at their experiences.

The review included 17 articles that shared the stories of 347 refugees and asylum-seekers. It found that their healthcare experiences are shaped by their individual circumstances, social connections, environment, and politics. Living in a rural area can be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, small communities can be supportive and close-knit. On the other hand, limited resources, distance, and isolation can create barriers to getting the care they need.

The study identified three key factors that influence their healthcare experiences: The Domains of Influence, The Power of the Social, and The Rural Effect. These factors highlight the complex interplay between a person's individual circumstances and their environment. They show how rural areas can amplify both the benefits and drawbacks of community life.

Despite efforts to resettle refugees and asylum-seekers in non-metropolitan areas, there is still a lack of research on their healthcare experiences. This review aims to fill that gap by characterizing their experiences and identifying the factors that shape them. Its findings can help healthcare providers and policymakers address health inequities in rural areas.

So, what can be done to improve their healthcare experiences? For one, healthcare providers can work to build trust with refugee and asylum-seeker communities. They can also advocate for more resources and support to address the unique challenges faced by these communities. By doing so, they can help ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare, regardless of where they live.
