Sealants in Dentistry: A Global Perspective

WorldWednesday, July 15, 2026

Dental care professionals around the world are not on the same page when it comes to using pit-and-fissure sealants, a proven way to prevent tooth decay. These sealants have been shown to be effective, but there's a gap between what is known and what is practiced.

A recent analysis of studies from different countries found that while many dentists know how to use sealants and assess the risk of tooth decay, their attitudes towards sealants vary widely. For example, about 69% of dentists believe that sealants can prevent tooth decay, but this number can range from as low as 8% to as high as 100% depending on where they practice.

The use of sealants is not consistent either. Only about 55% of dentists use sealants as a routine measure, and about 70% use resin sealants. The reasons for these inconsistencies are complex and depend on several factors, including the region, income level, and type of dental care specialist.

To bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, it's essential to improve training, disseminate guidelines, and provide system-level support. This will help ensure that dental care professionals have the resources they need to provide the best possible care for their patients.

The findings highlight the need for a more coordinated approach to promoting the use of pit-and-fissure sealants. By understanding the factors that influence the use of sealants, dental care professionals and policymakers can work together to develop targeted strategies for improving oral health outcomes.
