The Dark Side of Digestive Health Videos

WorldMonday, July 13, 2026

Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a crucial tool for diagnosing digestive diseases, but the public's understanding of it is often shrouded in misconceptions. The rise of short-video platforms like TikTok, Bilibili, and Kwai has made it easier for people to access health information, but the quality of endoscopy-related content varies greatly.

Researchers took a closer look at 300 endoscopy videos on these platforms and were surprised to find that 63.3% were uploaded by medical professionals, with TikTok being the most popular platform for them. Non-medical professionals made up 36.7% of the uploaders, with most of their videos on Bilibili and Kwai.

What stood out was that TikTok and Kwai videos got more engagement from users, with more likes, comments, and collections, but they were also shorter than Bilibili videos. When it came to quality, TikTok videos scored higher in reliability and accuracy, but overall, the content was lacking in completeness, with most videos missing key information about gastrointestinal endoscopy.

The study showed that there's a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the quality and comprehensiveness of endoscopy-related videos on these platforms. With medical professionals making up a significant portion of uploaders, it's clear that they have a crucial role to play in creating high-quality content.

By working together, these platforms, medical professionals, and regulators can make sure that the public has access to accurate and comprehensive health information, which is essential for promoting public health and preventing the spread of misinformation.
