West Nile Virus Alert: Europe Sees Early Cases

EuropeFriday, July 17, 2026

This summer, Europeans are on high alert for the West Nile virus. As of June 24, two countries have reported a total of three locally acquired human cases. Italy and North Macedonia are the countries affected, with cases reported from different regions. The first cases appeared in late May, with no fatalities reported so far.

In North Macedonia, a region called Vardarski has reported its first-ever case of the West Nile virus. Two of the infected individuals have shown neurological symptoms, while information on the third case is still unknown. All three patients have been hospitalized.

The situation so far seems to mirror previous years' patterns. However, it's still early, and health experts expect more cases to emerge in the coming weeks. Weather conditions are favorable for the virus to spread, which usually peaks in August and September.

Animals are also being affected. France and Italy have reported outbreaks among equids and birds. In Italy, hooded crows and a golden eagle have been infected. These outbreaks are happening in areas where the virus is already known to be present.

Health experts warn that the actual number of infections is likely higher than reported due to delays in diagnosis and reporting. Many infections are asymptomatic or subclinical, making it hard to track the virus's spread. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the European Food Safety Authority are closely monitoring the situation and expect more cases to be reported.
